Jagath Tours – An excellent driver and tour guide

We had Jagath drive us for five days in March 2019, mainly round the Cultural Triangle, and he was both an excellent driver and a very good guide. We had hired him (and paid slightly more) because of his guide qualifications, and we were very glad we did.
He picked us up at Colombo airport, and we threw him a curve-ball by saying we wanted to stop at Yapahuwa temple on the way, which we hadn’t mentioned in advance, which was on a different route from the normal one to Anurahadpura, and which he hadn’t been to for over two years. But without a word of complaint he calculated a new route (not wholly simple as most Sri Lankan drivers have a somewhat uncertain relationship with Google Maps) and when we got there he used his mobile phone to refresh his memory of the key facts about the site.
We covered Anurahadpura, Sigiriya, Polunnawara and Dambula with Jagath, before he finally dropped us in Kandy. At all the sites he was a mine of information, but after giving us the main facts and coming to some parts of the site he then let us look around on our own for a while, which worked very well. The only time he stayed with me throughout was when I climbed Pidurangula Rock, where he was very useful at helping me up some of the big boulders at the very top.
Throughout he was a very safe and careful driver, and gave us loads of information about the wider history of Sri Lanka, the history of Buddhism, and so on. Basically he was very good company
